Heritage project wins grant
A group of engineers has won a grant from Dorset County Council to conduct a study to assess the rate at which heritage engineering skills are being lost in the county. It is hoped that the work will eventually be extended across the UK.
The group, run by IMechE fellow Roddy Mullin, believes there is a nationwide shortage of people capable of repairing historic engineering equipment and structures, such as steam traction engines, vintage cars, tanks, bridges and canalside equipment.
The grant will enable Mullin and his team to compile an inventory of heritage structures in Dorset. “That will help us to assess the skills required to maintain them and to work out what sort of apprentice training needs to be provided,” he said.
Mullin wants any Dorset owners of heritage equipment or structures to get in touch with him. He is also looking for advice on how to go about establishing a heritage engineering “skills academy”.
