Scalextric design for schools
Engineering software firm PTC is in partnership with Scalextric-maker Hornby to put product design on to the national curriculum and into secondary schools.
The Scalextric4Schools scheme is aimed at children from 11 upwards. The scheme will require students to design and make their own Scalextric car, which they can then race around a specially designed circuit in regional and national competitions.
PTC makes its Pro/Engineer Wildfire software available to schools in the UK free of charge through its CAD in Schools programme, and Hornby will make its Scalextric car parts, including motors and drivetrains, available in both CAD and hardware forms.
The curriculum material has been developed for Key Stage 3 (11-14-year olds) and for Key Stage 4 and the Engineering Diploma (14+).
Mike Brown, education programme manager at PTC, said: “Kids can design a chassis, make the bodywork, wire it up and race it. Some challenges like this need lots of money but we wanted every kid to be able to take part.”
The website
www.scalex-tric4schools.org
goes live this week and school teams can register there.
Curriculum material for teachers is also available from the website.
